Fall Home Tour-No Place Like Home

Welcome to our home.  One of my most favorite things about our house is the confederate jasmine that covers the pillars on our front porch.

And you really need to come by in May, when the jasmine is in full bloom, and just sit on my porch and breathe in the heaven that is jasmine. BUT…sadly…my jasmine took a hit this summer…literally.

Our son Rob was tasked with tending to the yard and he practiced his samurai skills on my poor jasmine. But…it’ll grow back…right?. ?

I had a good time finding some unusual plants to fill my fall planters. I want to do something different than fall mums this year, so went with a purple ginger and some heuchera (coral bells). My creeping jenny is still going strong, so I left that in. I also added some twigs towards the back of the pot  and a small little pale orange pumpkin for added interest.

See that pumpkin on the stairs? Well, truth time.  He was a little ‘brighter’ orange than the little ones in my planters. So, what does a ‘painter of all things that don’t move’ do? Yup, I gave him a little whitewash to tone down his orange. Would that all of the world’s problems be fixed so simply with a little paint.

Now, welcome to our den. I chose to stay pretty simple with my fall mantle, using pine cones that I’ve collected in the square hurricanes, leaves, gourds and my Dad’s iron horse.

Funny story, well maybe not funny ‘ha-ha’ for my family, but I enjoy it.  When we hiked through Austria last summer, I was taken with their pine cones that were more delicate and longer than our hefty Carolina pine cones.

So taken was I, that I collected them on our hikes. And since it was too difficult to reach my own backpack, when I had a handful I’d stuff them in the backpack of whoever I was closest to at the time.

At the end of the day, everyone would empty their backpacks of pine cones but me! I am most appreciative of my family for toting these pine cones through the Austrian Alps. It makes my heart happy to open my box of ‘fall’ decorating stuff and find little trinkets, like these pine cones, from our travels. Another one of my ‘favorite things’.

On my hearth is my newly upcycled faux copper tub and my oyster basket filled with my oyster clusters, leaves and more gourds. I love the contrast between the gold of the leaves and gourds against the white/gray of the oysters.

So, you’ve heard the story of the oyster basket and the story of the ‘copper’ tub, which were both acquisitions from my little antiquing/anniversary vacay back in June.

Here’s the last of the little finds from that trip…a Herkimer Brand Blended Loaf Cheese wooden box that I found in a little antique store in Cold Spring, NY, on the Hudson River.  So, two questions…how do you not come home with something labeled ‘Herkimer Blended Loaf Cheese’, seriously?  And what the heck is ‘Herkimer Blended Loaf Cheese’?

Well, I did a little sleuthing on the googler and didn’t find ‘loaf cheese’ but did find that Herkimer is a family-owned cheese company in New York. Doesn’t look like they still make blended loaf cheese, but they have lots of other yummy sounding cheese stuff.  And those little milk bottles? Terry and I collected those along our journey as well, 1 is from a dairy in Maryland and the other 2 from dairies in NY…more mementos of our little trip.

This little set up worked perfectly for flowers on my table all summer and now is easing perfectly into its fall role.

This table setting also features some of my other favs… I am always looking for reasons to use those round wicker chargers.  And those rectangular place mats…those place mats are the BOMB! (Indulge me on straying from ‘fall’ for a minute.  But…this is really important)

You can get red spaghetti sauce or red wine on them and they wipe right off. You can put them in the dishwasher and they come out looking perfect.  I have had these for 12 years and they still look brand new. They are made by Saleen in Germany, look totally like a natural woven product, but they are some form of polypropylene.

They aren’t easy to find here in the US, so when we were in Prague last year, I bought 10 more…just in case.  I have seen them sold from time to time at One King’s Lane, Sur La Table and sometimes on Amazon.

Williams-Sonoma has several outlet stores, one of which is an hour or so north west of Atlanta. Kate and I had a ball in that store this summer and came home with MANY fun things. Two of my purchases were this set of napkins and linen table runner, which we knew would be perfect for a fall table.

And see those ‘wooden’ candle holders? Up until a week ago, they were gold. But before that they looked like this:

In case I’ve never told you…I ❤ PAINT! I had a ball putting a faux wood finish on them.

My pantry door, another one of the favorites things about my home, received a wreath of fall leaves. If you need other ideas for your doors, feel free to check out these other fall wreath ideas that I have collected.

And finally, the window sill over my sink holds my cloche with dried baby pumpkins and grandma’s milk glass planters jazzed up with a little wreath around a brick red candle.

I’m ready for fall…bring it! Ready to light the fireplace, watch a little football under a warm blanket, bake pumpkin and apple spiced pastries, eat soup and just settle in to enjoy all the fall has to offer.  Are you ready?

  3. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. I love the way your home tells a story. It is filled with special items that hold special memories. That is exactly the way a home should be. From the acorns to the iron horse to grandma’s milk glass, your home represents you. Oh…and that pantry door!!! Amazing!!!

    1. Hi Tammy, thanks for your sweet words. I do enjoy all our little ‘life’s mementos’ that we’ve accumulated over the years and having some of my grandparents’ special trinkets means a great deal to me. And I am very partial to that pantry door. We are actually thinking of putting our home on the market next year and I’m trying to find a way to take that door with me.
      Hope your Saturday is fantastic!

  4. Your home is just stunning! Love your front entrance! I need to talk to you sometime about what you did to your fireplace brick because I want to do something with the brick around my stove. It was so fun getting a peek inside your home. I love your fall decor, and I totally get your thing with wheat. It all looks fantastic!

    1. Hey there Robin, Thanks for coming by today. I would love to chat with you about my fireplace. I did cover up the existing brick and it was really pretty easy. It is fun peeking inside each other’s homes…isn’t it. I look forward to our next tour.

      Have a great day.

  5. I’m drooling over your front entry and your fireplace, Lynn! I really miss not have a fireplace in our condo. FYI, we have the same exact placemats. I bought ours at Whole Foods in Sarasota, FL years ago when we wintered in Florida. Now I have them at our cottage. I really love how you displayed your oyster clusters. I love touring all your houses today, just because I want to see them. Maybe someday I can see yours in real life!

    1. Aw thanks Carol. I do love my entry way and that fireplace had a complete re-do shortly after we moved in and now I really love it. And don’t you love those placemats! What does it say about us that we get geeked out about placemats!? And I hope you do find time to visit NC during your travels…I’d love to have you.
Have a great weekend my friend.

      Hugs, Lynn

  6. Lynn, what a warm and welcoming home you have. There is such beauty in your front entrance. I also love the smell of jasmine, it is my favorite summertime scent. You are so funny toning down the color of the pumpkins, only a blogger would do something like that. The wheat stalks are so pretty on the table, bringing in an earthy warmth. And the oysters on the fireplace look great juxtapositioned with the warm orange and copper. Happy Fall Lynn!

    1. Thanks Mary…I do love that front entry, especially when the Jasmine is blooming. I will have to be sure to take a photo of it in the spring, when it’s recovered from it’s recent ‘shave’. 😐 And isn’t it true about what only a blogger will do. Documenting each and everything makes you look at things in a new light.
Thanks so much for visiting today!

      Hugs, Lynn

  7. Aw Lynn, I love peeking into your home! It looks lovely for Fall! All the little details make it so inviting and cozy. I especially love your entrance, wow, it’s just stunning with the Jasmine, your table centerpiece is so pretty along with the cloche with the baby pumpkins! Thank your for showing your lovely home for Fall!

    1. Hi my friend, I hope you and all yours are well and enjoying a lovely weekend. Thanks so much for stopping by to visit today. I had a fun time getting my home already for fall…that’s one thing that blogging makes you do!

      Wishing you a great day.

      Hugs, Lynn

  8. Fantastic fall tour! I am crazy about your blended loaf cheese box and how you put the wheat in the milk bottles inside it. You chose the perfect runner and napkins to go with it. I CANNOT believe the transformation in those candleholders with the brown paint – gorgeous!

    1. Good Morning Lori…and thanks so much for swinging by today. Don’t you just love that loaf cheese box?! And it wouldn’t have been nearly as irresistible if it wasn’t entitled ‘Herkimer’…don’t you agree? And I was really quite tickled with those candlesticks as well…they’ve been pining away in my pantry because they just weren’t my style anymore, but now they’re front and center.

Thanks so much for you kind comments and I’m looking forward to seeing the tablescape tour you are on.

      Have a great day.

      Hugs, LYnn

    1. Hi Stacey! So good to hear from you…seems like Haven was forever ago! And thanks for your sweet compliment. I actually painted that several years ago and it remains one of my favorites.
I hope all is well in your world and I am so looking forward to heading back to Haven next year.

      Have a great weekend.

      Hugs, Lynn

    1. Thanks Samantha…it really is one of my favorite parts of our home, especially when the Jasmine hasn’t suffered a severe haircut! ? But, c’est la vie…especially with 17-year old son ‘yard maintenance’ men. Another friend of mine commented that only a blogger would whitewash a pumpkin…probably true.

      Thanks for swinging by today!

      Hugs, Lynn

  9. Lynn, great fall tour. I love, love the Herkimer Loaf box. Lucky you for finding it. And your pantry door is awesome. Congrats for being a Featured post at Your Inspired Design Link Party this week. We love having you.

    1. Good Morning Carol, you and I must have very similar tastes because I too love that Herkimer box (I just love saying it!) and that pantry door! We’re putting our house in the market after the new year and I’m trying to figure out how I can take it with me for my next house.
Glad to be at your party and thanks for the feature! Makes me smile.

      Have a great weekend.

      Hugs, Lynn
