Oh Janet, I'm glad you found the 'laying field', but saddened it was in an antique fur jacket! I know that was heartbreaking for you. Dang those awful little creatures!

I'm relieved that my article has helped you manage the pests, it's an ongoing challenge until you fully eradicate them.

Keep the faith, my friend.

I found this article a couple of years ago (thank goodness!). I have always stored my seasonal clothes in rubbermaid boxes and the hanging clothes in a cedar closet. Then we moved here and I began to find holes in cotton t-shirts and in a brand new just purchased shirt. I was stumped as to why this was happening but then found "remains" in a couple of the plastic boxes. I have always vacuumed and washed the closets and dresser drawers when changing over each season but after reading this article, I vacuumed and washed the inside of each box as well. Since I read the article I bought the moth traps you recommended and lo and behold, the first week I put them up, they were LOADED with moths! I called an exterminator who quoted $1200 to exterminate a couple of closets and according to him, would have to have every piece of clothing dried cleaned. Dry cleaning is very expensive where I live so that was not an option. The moth traps have helped tremendously and at least give me a head's up when I have moth activity. In the meantime, I continue to maintain the closets and clothes, never putting anything in that hasn't been washed and recently invested in some transparent clothes bags for the hanging clothes. The activity has been reduced but unfortunately am still finding some activity despite, every effort. I've even sprayed with the moth trap company's spray. And recently found what might have been the biggest "laying field" - an antique real fur jacket that was covered with moth holes and missing fur. It was heartbreaking to throw my mother's coat away but it was not salvageable. Since then, activity has been very limited, thank Goodness! Thanks for the article which is saving my clothes!!!!

Thanks so much, Margaret! It is so helpful to have first-hand experience with these tips. And I'm all about finding non-chemical ways to deal with little nasties.

Have a great day!

Freezing works beautifully and without chemicals.
Put garments in the freezer (or outside if it's cold enough - I store my wool yarns outside in the winter). Leave for a week to kill the moths, bring inside for a week to allow eggs and pupae to hatch and get going and then freeze for another week.

I've bought the lil hanging plastic satchels and wondered what on earth they were letting off into that enclosed space!
