HI Judy, I hate that your grand-daughter’s cookies spread! Ugh, but assure her that it happens to the best of bakers from time to time.

She would have had to add a bunch of crushed peppermint to cause it to spread. My guess is that the cookies didn’t set up and spread because the dough was too warm. Did she let it refrigerate for at least 4 hours? Even after cutting them out, it is helpful to put them back in the fridge before baking them. When in doubt, make sure they are well-chilled before baking.

The other reasons they might have spread were that there wasn’t enough flour, too much sugar or fat, or that the butter was too soft.

Tell her not to give up!
