  5. Monday Musings, September 3

Good Morning my friends.

I was greeted by this lovely morning sky when I took Flora out at 5;45 a.m.  I love being up when no one else is up…it brings me a certain peace.

Here is the U.S. we are enjoying the long weekend, honoring the social and economic achievements of our Nation's hard workers.  This weekend also seems to signal the end of summer and the transition to fall, at least here in the Northern Hemisphere.

I do hope all of you with a long weekend are enjoying every minute of it.

We ‘sprung' our son from college on Friday and so are enjoying time with him this weekend.

Speaking of my son, I must share a ‘boy mom' story.

On Friday, before we left school to bring him home, I mentioned that he could use the duffle bag his grandparents gave him to bring his stuff home in…more as a way to remind him that he did have that duffle bag at school.

So he brought the duffle bag, his backpack full of books and we hit the road.

When we arrived home and unpacked the car, I would love to say that I was surprised to find that he brought his duffle bag home…empty.  But I guess I'm really not.

So by extension, he did not bring any clothes or toiletries home either.  Give the guy credit…he has mastered  ‘traveling light.'

Boy moms…can you relate?

In addition to the regular great offering of the internet, lots of good sales this week as well. Let's get to it.

Some of these links may be affiliate links and I may earn a small commission off of the sale of these products, but the price you are charged is not affected. You can see my full disclosure policy here.

Any special cookout plans for today?  We had originally planned on our pulled pork, but then got lazy and so will be preparing burgers using our favorite seasoning.

And for a change of pace, we will be having this Shaved Brussel Sprouts Salad

Need some new cutting boards? Several really lovely ones on sale at Terrain.

On being kind to people you dislike

I think I am going to treat myself to one of these butter crocks.  Do you use one?  Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Surely a place in heaven for this couple.

Need a large wooden salad bowl? On sale at Sur La Table right now.  (50% off) Thinking I might get a few for Christmas gifts.

Love this idea for a fall planter.

We are determined to eat more fish…this looks like a great dish.

The first of several installments on how to use color in your home.

Cute Sweater Pumpkins!

Book Update!  I finished Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult and loved every minute of it…it was just what I was looking for to break the trend of formulaic books I had previously picked up! Not only a great story, but my family has long had a love affair with elephants and this book just reinforced it.

I want to share one line of the book that made me stop and read it again…a talented writer finds a way to illustrate a feeling so that you can see it. In talking about finding the right person:

“It was almost as if there was a tear in the fabric I was made of, and he was the only color thread that would match to stitch it back up.”  Don't you just love that?!

On to The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See, which is lovely thus far! Beautifully written and not a hint of formula.

There you have it my friends..go forth and enjoy the day!

Our Book Club read the Tea Girl, and loved it! So different from any books we had read, and so interesting to read about a topic, tea leaves, that I knew nothing about!
