Hi Sofia,

If they are sufficiently dehydrated, you should be able to store them at room temp indefinitely. They should be mostly crisp when fully dehydrated.

Good Morning Sherri,

I would recommend dehydrating them a bit longer. If your sweet potato slices are just a tad thicker, then it will take longer. Does your oven have a convection setting? That would also help dry them out. You could go ahead and put them back in now, even if they've been at room temperature for a bit.

The drier they are, the longer they will last at room temperature.

Let me know how that works.

I tried making the sweet potato chews this afternoon in the oven. They were in for about 3 hours.

They didn’t turn out like the ones I buy at the pet store. The ones at the pet store are harder, and they say on the package that they just have one ingredient - sweet potatoes. The ones I made were soft in the centre. The dogs liked them, but they don’t look like what I was expecting.

Would I have better results if I tried using a dehydrator?

Hi Leon,

Poor Bonnie! These sweet potatoes chews will thankfully work for her as that is the only ingredient. Let me know how your sweet girl likes them.

Thanks for this recipe/idea. Also looked at your 3 ingredient dog treats as my Bonnie just got diagnosed as being allergic to almost everything. Only: Eggs, Barley and Potato did not come back positive. No fruits were tested so I might be able to introduce a few and peanut butter later on. Thanks again

In reply to <a href="https://nourishandnestle.com/sweet-potato-dog-chews-recipe/#comment-18430">garlic & dogs</a>.

Hi Danny,

Thanks for reaching out. But I think you may have my recipe confused with someone else’s. My sweet potato dog treat recipe is just dehydrated sweet potatoes and I don’t believe that there is a mention of garlic powder anywhere in the post; but I am human so if there is a mention of garlic, I’d really appreciate you letting me know where so I can correct it. Like you, I am well aware of the danger of both garlic and onions to dogs and would never add it intentionally.

Here’s the link to the post again…

I hope you do figure out whose dog treat recipe does have garlic powder so that they can correct it. I’d hate for well-intentioned pup parents to add that ingredient to their treats.

Your recipie for dog sweet potatoes says to add garlic powder. I found this, "According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, garlic and other members of the allium family, including onions, contain thiosulfate, which is toxic to dogs but not to humans. Thiosulfate causes oxidative damage to red blood cells, resulting in hemolytic anemia."
