Looking at the underside of your block I’d say it’s a slot for a meat cleaver rather than a knife. Your saved item is nice and your explanation is appreciated.

Sounds like you need to find another cutting board at the thrift store! And it sounds like I need to accompany you on your thrifting forays! Linen napkins and a lovely cutting board! I found my cutting board at a thrift store, but my batting average finding good stuff is otherwise very low! Do you go to Goodwill and Habitat ReStores? I think I need to go more often; I seem to wait until I am looking for something particular and then never find it.

And my heart is happy that I helped keep you busy during the pandemic. I do love this wee job of mine, but it all themore rewarding when I know I am actually doing what I set out to do.

Hi Lynn, Like many others, I came across your website while searching for knit dishcloth patterns. And along with finding those patterns, I discovered your wonderful weekly newsletter of all sorts of interesting tips and projects, one of them being how to restore a wood cutting board. I had always been intrigued with restoring a board but was reluctant, not knowing what it may have been used for in the past. Luckily I found one at my local thrift shop and although not as unique as yours, it was exactly what I was searching for. The hydrogen peroxide worked like a charm. My daughter is thrilled with it and my husband wanted to keep it. Thanks so much for sharing the dishcloth patterns but mostly for your weekly emails which helped to keep me sane during these pandemic lockdowns.

Thanks so much for your input Hermione! I do think that a good butcher block oil makes a difference…sometimes you really do get what you pay for! I don’t have an acacia wood cutting board, but they sure are beautiful.

I have an Acacia wood cutting board that I’ve had for 15 years now. The oil I got at walmart was too watery and didn’t work well. I got the butchers block oil from Ironwood ( https://www.ironwoodgourmet.com ) and it worked great for me. It brought the color of the board back. Just buy butchers block oil anywhere that’s decent.

Great find indeed! I love how you restored it. I think a huge knife for sure was placed on the bottom. Great work!
