Smoky Turkey Chili

This crockpot turkey chili recipe is the perfect 'set and forget' meal. Whether it's a game day, a ski day, a busy day or just a cold night, this ground turkey chili will be a welcome meal come dinner time. A few minutes of prep time in the morning will yield a big batch of healthy and hearty turkey chili for dinner. Both crockpot and stovetop instructions are provided.

Ingredients
  

  • 3 pounds ground turkey
  • 2 onions diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic crushed
  • 3 15- ounce cans of diced tomatoes
  • 2 15- ounce cans of tomato sauce
  • 2 15- ounce cans of kidney beans or 1 1/2 cups of dried kidney beans that have been soaked and cooked.
  • 1 can of beer
  • 4 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seed crushed
  • 2 cups chicken broth optional, if you want a soupier chili
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions
 

CROCKPOT OR SLOW COOKER DIRECTIONS:

  • Brown ground turkey in a large skillet
  • in a large (6 quart) crockpot, add turkey and the rest of the ingredients.
  • Cook for 4 hours on high or 6 hours on low heat.

STOVETOP DIRECTIONS:

  • Brown ground turkey in a large pot or dutch oven over medium heat. Once the turkey starts releasing its juices, add the onion so it cooks alongside the turkey.
  • Once the turkey is no longer pink, add the remaining ingredients and simmer for 40 minutes.
  • While the chili will be ready now, it is always better the next day.
