Parmesan Cheese Crisps

These Parmesan Cheese Crisps are the answer if you’re looking for an easy, flavor-packed appetizer with minimal ingredients and little effort. Bonus points: These crisps are not only a gluten-free snack but also low in carbs, making them an excellent choice for keto and low-carb diets.

With just Parmesan cheese and a sprinkle of everything bagel seasoning (or your favorite seasoning), you can create savory, crispy bites perfect for snacking, entertaining, or adding a delicious crunch to soups and salads. These Parmesan cheese crisps come together in just 20 minutes, making them a go-to when you’re short on time.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Cheese Options: Parmesan has a perfect salty, sharp flavor, but you could substitute half the Parmesan with other hard cheeses like Asiago or Romano for a slightly different taste. Asiago is less salty, has a slightly nuttier flavor, and has a softer texture; while Romano tends to be saltier than Parmesan. Adding these varieties can transform your Parmesan cheese crisps into a unique snack.
  • Seasoning Variations: Swap out the everything bagel seasoning for Italian herbs, smoked paprika, or even a touch of chili flakes if you prefer a bit of heat.
  • Add Seeds or Nuts: Adding sesame seeds, chia seeds, or finely chopped nuts before baking can provide an extra layer of texture.
  • Herbs and Spices: Freshly cracked black pepper or a sprinkle of rosemary can add an aromatic touch that complements the Parmesan’s flavor.

How will you use these Parmesan Cheese Crisps?

In truth, I enjoy these Parmesan crisps just on their own or with a shmear of cream cheese, but they also pair wonderfully with a variety of dips, spreads, and even as a topping:

  • Dips: Serve with marinara, hummus, or a creamy spinach-artichoke dip.
  • Cheese Boards: Add these crisps to a cheese and charcuterie board as a crunchy, gluten-free option.
  • Salad Topping: Crumble the crisps over a Caesar or arugula salad for added flavor and crunch.
  • Soup Side: These Parmesan cheese crackers pair perfectly with creamy tomato soup but nicely complement just about any soup except a cheese-based soup. Truly, there’s no better addition than Parmesan cheese crisps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these crisps in advance?

Yes, these Parmesan cheese crisps store well for about a week in an airtight container at room temperature. Avoid refrigerating them, as they can lose their crispiness in the fridge.

Why shouldn’t I use pre-grated Parmesan cheese?

Pre-grated Parmesan often contains anti-caking agents, which prevent it from melting evenly. Using a wedge of Parmesan that you grate yourself ensures the crisps will melt how you want them to.

How would you bake these in an air fryer?

To bake them in an air fryer, use a perforated parchment sheet and bake at 350°F for about 5-7 minutes, watching closely as they crisp up even quicker in the air fryer.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces parmesan cheese wedge See note 1
  • 2 tbsp everything bagel seasoning See note 2

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ (177℃), with the oven rack in the middle position.
  • Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper
  • Grate parmesan cheese. Opt for smaller rather than large shreds.
  • Sprinkle the parmesan cheese evenly over the baking sheet. Use your fingers to spread it out as evenly as possible.
Shredded parmesan cheese over parchment paper on baking tray.
  • Sprinkle everything bagel seasoning evenly over the parmesan cheese.
  • Bake for 11-15 minutes. Start watching at 10 minutes. You want the cheese be lightly golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven and immediately slice into squares or rectangles. It hardens quickly, which will make it hard to cut without it breaking unevenly.
  • Store your Parmesan Cheese Crisps in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes

Note 1: Don’t use already grated parmesan cheese, which is coated with potato starch and powdered cellulose. These additives keep the cheese from clumping together and prevent it from melting nicely.
Note 2: Parmesan cheese is inherently salty. A salt-free everything bagel seasoning is a good choice if you are watching your sodium intake.
