Monday Musings, April 15

Happy Monday!

What a gorgeous morning we are enjoying here on the southeast coast of North Carolina! Crystal blue skies and a lovely brisk breeze…I have the windows open and am enjoying the fresh air and the birdsong!

First things first, if you are thinking of sending me a message today (and you know I love your messages!) PLEASE  don’t mention anything about Game of Thrones last night.  Terry is out of town, comes back late tonight, and I promised I would wait to watch it until he got home. Which means I need to live in a social media vacuum for the next 35 hours!

Our daughter, Kate, took her MCAT on Saturday and Friday night one of my dearest friends texted me…”R U going to be there when she’s done?” To which I replied, “No…hadn’t thought of it!”, to which she replied, “She may just need to collapse in your arms and be pampered.” My wise friend speaks from experience; her daughter is currently in her second year of residency.

So, let me lay the groundwork…Terry is out of town, we are trying to sell our house and had a showing at noon on Saturday, the test was at a location 2.5 hours from both Kate and me, the test would be over around 3 – 3:30 pm on Saturday and I had an engagement party to attend Saturday evening. So, I go to bed mulling this whole thing over…how could I do.all.the.things?

Then, at 11:30 Friday night, I am awakened by a phone call from our weepy daughter who is staying at a hotel near the test site. “Mom, I am throwing up!”

I think it was nerves, she thinks it was something she ate. But in any event, on a night when she needs the best night sleep ever in preparation for a grueling 7.5-hour test that she has been intensely studying towards for the past 4 months, Kate is up for several hours vomiting…in a hotel room…all by herself!

Well, that rather sealed it. I went into motion Saturday morning preparing the house for the showing, made arrangement for the 2 pets, made arrangements for a friend to come over and turn off all the lights after the showing, got my gift to a friend in case I didn’t make it back to the party, packed clothes and makeup in case I did make it back to the party, packed pajamas in case Kate and I just decided to spend the night in a hotel in Greenville and hit the road on a rainy Saturday by 12:00.

Kate didn’t know I was coming, so was completely surprised to see me sitting there as she walked out of the test…and it was so worth it. She didn’t collapse into my arms but was actually quite calm about the whole thing. I told her I was prepared for whatever she wanted to do…go to Starbucks and chat, go to good dinner, get a hotel room and chill, whatever…that I just wanted to be there for her.  And you know what she wanted to do?

“Can we go and get a manicure?”

We found a nail salon and while she got her nails done, I just sat by her side and we chatted…and it was wonderful.

After the manicure, she said what she really wanted to do was to head back to her apartment, to her bunny Remie and to go to sleep. She had some assignments due late Sunday, classes and her internship today and she needed to get her act together.

So, we kissed and hugged and teared up, and then we both hit the road, back to our respective towns.

I stopped at my parent’s house to change and made it to the engagement party, fashionably 40 minutes late! And I am so glad that I was able to celebrate the impending marriage of a beautiful young woman who I used carpool back and forth from swim team practice.

After gathering my pets, I came home late Saturday night just so thankful…thankful for friends who care enough to reach out and nudge me, thankful for friends and family who picked up the slack on last minute notice, and thankful that the planets sometimes do align and that I was able to do all the things. It meant the world to Kate that I was there for her…and that is worth moving heaven and earth.

Suffice it to say…I slept really well Saturday night!

A friend of mine gifted this book the soon-to-be newlyweds, I’m tucking it away for future gifting.

I gifted a variety of kitchen items she had registered for but also threw in my new favorite kitchen gadget. I purchased several of these very inexpensive (as in 2 for $5), but VERY useful gadgets for gifting.

  1. Lynn,
As mothers, we all have had this phone call at some time or another. What a comforting feeling for your daughter to have you make it happen so that you are there for her. These are the moments she will recall when she has her own children in the future. I feel like sometimes things work out and fall into place, but I’m sure it is a lot of how you prepare and plan out things in advance. You seem great at that!! Blessings to you,

    1. Hey there friend!

I was so very happy that it worked out…I’m a big believer in Kismet or God’s will…so surely it was kismet that I was able to put it all in place. And I’m surely not a perfect mom, but I was able to score all sorts of ‘mom bonus points’ on Saturday! And on top of it, it turned out to be a fun day! I’m a bit of a control freak, so tossing all control to the wind was kinda fun!

Have a fantastic day my friend.

      Hugs, Lynn
