News from the Nest, September 26
Happy Monday, friends!
I hope your weekend was everything you needed it to be! If you needed your batteries recharged, I hope it was relaxing and recharging. If you needed to get stuff done, I hope it was productive.
Mine was a glorious combination of both! I finished a knit hat pattern that I will get published this week for you. I watched college football, guiltily savored a delicious everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, did a little yard work, and had my mom over for dinner last night! What really made the weekend the best was the cool, fall-like weather we enjoyed Friday and Saturday. In fact, it seemed only appropriate that I celebrate the cool-ish football weekend with a pot of this Turkey Chili! I put it in the crockpot and enjoyed the aroma all day. Pure bliss!
p.s. the giveaway info is located at the bottom of the post.
- If you find yourself without chili seasoning on the day you really want to make chili, here are some substitutes and a chili seasoning recipe that I use.
- Did you know that Friday, September 30, is National Hot Mulled Cider Day? I’m sure you’ve had it circled on your calendar since National Hot Mulled Cider Day last year! Am I Right? In any event, let’s take the time to celebrate Hot Mulled Cider and all the good it has done for humanity and the environment this Friday. Of course, you need mulling spices, and I have you covered there. You might as well make extra to use and give as gifts on Friday or the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. If you are expecting guests for the big day, you might want to bake this Apple Cider Doughnut cake to stick with the whole cider theme. And if your celebrations go on into the night, break out this Spiked Caramel Apple Cider.
- One of my favorite kitchen appliances is on sale right now. I was really late coming to the Countertop oven…I just never saw the need. But my parents gave my brother and me each one of these Breville Smart Ovens 5-6 years ago, and it has been a game changer for us! We rarely turn on our big oven, thereby saving a good deal of energy. In addition to using it like we would a regular oven, we love the air fryer option, the dehydrator option, and the pizza option is the end-all-and-be-all. I’ve roasted both roast beef and chicken in it with perfect results. Right now, it is 20% off at Williams-Sonoma.
- And I might just have to indulge on this fall leaves pie crust cutter!
- This Savory Onion Jam is so delicious, with thyme, red wine, and balsamic vinegar. It also makes a very appreciated food gift.
- When we lived in Franklin, TN, we had a favorite bakery that made the best pumpkin bars. I experimented for years to replicate their bars, and this is my recipe.
- Develop ‘systems’ or routines to help you reduce stress daily. Let’s delve into more ways to help reduce stress in our lives.
- Speaking of stress and anxiety, if you carry your stress in your neck 🙋🏻♀️, you may want to make yourselves one of these microwavable heating pads. Not for nothing, they make great gifts too!
- This Oyster Shell Mirror is way up there on my most favorite projects list!
- If you will be hanging with the grownups this Halloween, you may just want to indulge in this Black Widow Martini. And if you do, you really need to plop in a small cube of dry ice for the full effect. It is harmless as long as it doesn’t come in contact with your lips.

- If you’ve wanted to bake madeleines but were intimidated by their reputation for being finicky, you need this recipe for Spiced Madeleines (with or without a maple glaze). Of course, I have shared the recipe, but also some tips that will make baking your madeleines a success every time.
- And if the recipe isn’t enough to encourage you to pop over, then this GIVEAWAY just might! Bellemain graciously offered a set of their lidded, stainless steel mixing bowls just in time for holiday baking!

Good morning. I enjoyed looking through the specialty tools. The funnels looked fantastic. I love to place my leftovers in mason jars. Using a funnel makes the job mess free. Can’t wait to see your pattern for your hat. Cool weather is coming.

I’d likely enjoy my holiday baking a bit more with the set of stainless steel measuring cups, as I’m currently using the last remaining bits and bobs of several melamine and plastic sets. The simple task of reaching for a specific cup turns into a scavenger hunt since the remaining cups no longer nestle together as sets. In addition, the durability of the stainless steel cups would obviate this very situation from happening again.
I wasn’t aware of this brand –thanks for sharing!
Hi Andrea,
Thanks for your comment! You are entered into the contest…good luck!

Lynn, I know you used to live in Franklin and I am thinking of moving there fromMiami. Any hints, recommendations?
We loved Franklin, but its been 20 years since we moved from there. I am heading back there in March though
It is just the right distance from Nashville, but still had a quaint small town feel when we lived there. I imagine it’ll be quite a change from Miami!
What is taking you to Franklin?
I checked out Bellemain site and saw several items I would love to have but top pick is Bellemain Ravioli Maker Press.
Hi Kathlene,

But bowls with lids, an item hard to find, bowls get used so much for other things. Thanks for the chance to win! reciepe have to try!

Turkey chili – sounds like a “game changer” to me:) I will have to try it on a cold Minnesota day – will be lots of days to choose from.
JOY,
vicki
This turkey chili is so easy to make and so soul-warming. Though I’ve never spent a winter in Minnesota, I can only image that something warm and spicy will help keep the chill away.
Thanks for commenting!
I really like the Bellemain Stainless Steel Non-Slip Mixing Bowls with Lids (3 Piece, Silver/Black). The idea of nonslip is very intriguing. Thank you for the chance to win a prize.
