Crochet Washcloth Pattern Using Lemon Peel Stitch

I have forever been a knitter, learning during my lunch break at my first ‘real’ job 35 years ago.

But, I started ‘dabbling’ in crochet about 4 years ago, solely as a way to add some interesting borders to my knit projects. This Chinese Wave Knit Washcloth to which I added a crocheted picot edge was my first foray into crochet. I’ve been smitten ever since.

Several of you have written to ask for other decorative edge alternatives since you hadn’t yet tried your hand at crochet. The Knit Applied I-Cord is surely one way to finish a knit washcloth if you don’t want to venture into crochet.

Still others have requested some beginner crochet posts in the hopes of also venturing into crochet. So, this post is dedicated to all of you who definitely want to learn to crochet and those of you who may be on the fence and could use a bit of nudge.

As I said, I am relatively new to crochet as well, so we will be talking very basic crochet here; chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitch. With those 4 stitches in your back pocket, you can crochet this Lemon Peel Stitch Crochet Washcloth Pattern and add the sweet scalloped edge to it as well.

• I used Lily’s Sugar ‘n Cream Yarn, which is a medium worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn. I use this inexpensive yarn in all my washcloths…it holds up phenomenally to repeated washing and bleaching. For $5.99 a skein I can make 2 washcloths. For this washcloth, I used both white and hot pink.
• A H8, 5MM Crochet Hook

Basic Crochet Stitches Needed for this Lemon Peel Stitch Washcloth:

I produced a video showing these stitches in detail because I am a believer in a picture is worth a thousand words. After showing these basic stitches, the video then shows detail specific to the Lemon Peel Stitch and this Crochet Washcloth Pattern. The link for the video will follow the pattern.

Chain Stitch

Single Crochet (SC)

Double Crochet (DC)

Slip Stitch (SL ST)

How to Crochet the Lemon Peel Stitch:

Chain Stitch 32 stitches (or an even number)

N&N Hint: Try to keep your tension a little loose while working this chain.

Turn your work and make 1 turning chain.

SC into the second chain from the needle

DC  into the third chain.

Repeat SC and DC for the remainder of the row, ending on a DC

Turn your work and make 1 turning chain

SC into the first chain, then DC. Repeat *SC, DC*  for remainder of row, ending on a DC

Work until washcloth measures 10” or the same length as the width.

Without tying your work off or cutting your yarn, use crochet hook and SC to go around the whole piece with same yarn as body of washcloth. Work 3 SC into each corner.

The body of the washcloth (before the edge) will measure 10” by 10”. With this size washcloth, you will pick up a total of 80 stitches, divided evenly on all sides. In general, I pick up every 2nd to 3rd stitch to get the 80 stitches. Even though you are working 3 stitches into each corner, only count each corner as 1 stitch when counting your 80 stitches. (If your washcloth is a different size, just make sure you pick up an even number of stitches)

Using contrasting yarn,  crochet a SC into each of the 80 stitches you just made, working 3 SCs into each corner.

When you return back around, SC 4 times in next stitch. Then Slip stitch the following stitch. Repeat this *4SC into next stitch, SL ST* pattern around the whole washcloth. If you have an even number of stitches, you should be able to have a slip stitch between the first and last scallop.
