Checkerboard Crochet Blanket Pattern

This Checkerboard Crochet Blanket is a fun and versatile project perfect for crocheters of all skill levels.

Its simple construction of thirty individual squares makes it easy to work on the go or in small steps. Once the squares are complete, they are sewn together, and a simple border adds the finishing touch, creating a cozy and eye-catching throw blanket. To crochet and sew this blanket, allot approximately 15 hours.

The alternating color pattern creates a striking checkerboard design, and the flexibility of adding or subtracting squares allows for easy customization to suit your desired size.

Instructions for Checkerboard Crochet Blanket Pattern

  • This blanket is made of 30 squares (15 in each color). This makes it easy to work on the go, as you can make one square at a time. Once complete, the squares are sewn together, and a simple border is worked around the edge. Each square is 9”x 9”, and the total blanket is 54”x 45”. To adjust the size for a smaller or larger blanket, add or decrease the number of squares.
  • Row 1: Chain 37
  • Row 2: In the second stitch from the hook, SC. SC in each stitch along the row. CH 1 and turn. (36 stitches total)
  • Row 3: Skip one stitch, HDC in the next stitch. HDC in the first stitch that you skipped. This pattern will repeat for the row. Skip a stitch, HDC in the next, then HDC in the stitch you skipped. This will form an X from two HDC stitches. CH 1 and turn at the end of the row.
  • Row 4–21: Repeat row 3, cut yarn, and CH 1 to fasten. Weave in both ends.

Instructions for Sewing Squares to Make Checkerboard Blanket

  • Lay the 30 squares in a checkerboard pattern, alternating green and white. Once laid out, there will be three sections of 10 squares each. I find it easiest to sew groups of squares together and then sew the three sections together to complete the blanket. It makes the sewing more manageable.

Ensure that you have the blocks lined up so that you have the vertical pattern running vertically.

Lay out squares.
  • Cut a piece of yarn a few inches longer than the length of two squares, and sew along the vertical seams two squares at a time.
  • Once the vertical seams are complete, cut a long piece of yarn and sew across the horizontal seam of all five squares. This completes section one.
  • Repeat this for the other two sections, then cut another long piece of yarn to sew the three sections together.

Instructions for Crocheting Edge Around Blanket

Attach yarn anywhere along the side of the blanket. SC in each stitch along the side of the blanket. When you reach the corner, SC 3 in the corner stitch. Then, continue to SC in each stitch along the sides.

  1. hello , the checkerboard pattern is beautiful and so easy to understand and make.
i plan on making quite a few for xmas gifts, they work up quickly.
i have a suggestion for sewing squares together, see what you think.
when done with one square, go around the 2 side edges with single crochet.the top and, bottom edges already have finished edges.
when you go to sew squares together, only pickup the back loop, the front loops will form a nice finished edge on your front squares.
.i will be happy to send you a pic when i complete one.it will make the beautiful pattern blocks stand out.
    thank you.

    1. Hi Jen,

I think that’s a great idea! Wish I had thought of that. Please do send a pic when finished and I will include that as an option in the pattern.

Thanks so much for sharing your suggestions, it makes this a better site for everyone.

      Happy Croceting!
