News From The Nest, March 2

Good Morning, friends.

We just returned from a lovely weekend in Charlotte, visiting our son and his girlfriend. Do you remember the Beverly Hillbillies show? I fear we looked a little like them as we packed Mom, Mom’s dog Gigi, Terry, me, Elsa, and Peep the cat into the car for the long weekend! We made it up and back without any drama, other than Peep throwing up on me. 🤢 While in Charlotte, we enjoyed a lovely dinner/reunion with friends of 40+ years, whom we don’t see enough. It was one of those weekends that was good for the soul!

“There is no greater remedy for the heart, nor sweeter comedy for the soul, than the company of an old friend.”

We returned home to a beautiful, 70°F day that pulled us outside, if only for a wee bit. I transferred my seedlings to the back porch to begin their acclimation. Our last frost date is the middle of March, and I’d love to get my green babies some real sun. I won’t plant them until after the last frost date, but I can keep them out as long as there isn’t a frost forecast.

If you are feeling the pull of Spring, you’ll find many of the articles in today’s newsletter will only strengthen that tug.

My mom’s Curry Salad Dressing has been a family favorite since I was a little girl in Hawaii — it’s bright, punchy, and all you need to elevate a simple bowl of greens. Reader Heather commented, “I just made this dressing for the second time this month. It is that good! I love it on a simple green salad with some goat cheese. The flavors take a simple salad into something way more complex!”

Speaking of spring gatherings, Jalapeño Pepper Wine Jelly is one of those “why haven’t I made this sooner” condiments — it’s the perfect balance of sweet and spicy, and it’s just as wonderful spooned over cream cheese for an appetizer as it would be drizzled over a charcuterie board.

These Sourdough Discard Pancakes are my absolute favorite way to use up sourdough discard — they come together in minutes and have a slight tang that makes them taste like something from a fancy brunch spot. If you’ve got a starter going, don’t throw that discard away. Pro Tip: If you’d like to be the most popular person in your home, serve these pancakes one morning!
