News From The Nest, April 7

Good Morning!

Welcome to a new week!

When my children were in elementary school, their principal would start every day with announcements, followed by this sage advice,

The choices you make today shape your world tomorrow. Make it a great day!

It’s been a hot minute since my children were in elementary school, but that little tidbit regularly passes through my mind.

We had a most productive weekend. I took Terry to the airport Saturday morning so he could fly to Philly and retrieve Kate’s car. He then immediately hit the road for the nine-hour drive home. He was home in time for us to watch basketball!

Sunday, we spent the sunny day starting to reclaim our backyard. In addition to the mess made from the construction, we had to move our vegetable and flower garden for the dumbest reason on earth, which I won’t bore you with, but it rhymes with HOA. I’ve heard a rumor that the sod will be laid this week, which is crucial as I have a house with three dogs who seem to have a homing device for mud, which we have plenty of.

Suffice it to say, I slept very well last night! 💤

We will meet with the trainer later this week to learn how to help Elsa with her OCD. She was very honest in saying that OCD in dogs is hard to correct. We have accepted that she will always have it, but we need to learn ways to manage it and help her get out of the cycles she gets into. We have found that a cool mat seems to settle her almost immediately. The one we have is in rough shape; does anyone have one they highly recommend?

  • Shrimp and Grits, with humble beginnings, have been elevated to fine dining. In 1985, Craig Claiborne wrote a column in The New York Times after tasting the dish prepared by Bill Neal in his Chapel Hill, NC, Crook’s Corner restaurant. A local chef shared this recipe with me, and it is truly the best I’ve tasted.
