News From the Nest, June 16

Why, hello there! Long time no see!

For the past three weeks, we’ve lived in the ‘if it’s Monday, we must be in…’ world. We returned from our fantastic trip through the Adriatic and Greece last Saturday, packed a van on Sunday, and caravanned up to Cleveland, with my mom in tow, on Monday and Tuesday.

We moved Kate into her new home on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of last week and made the return trip home on Friday and Saturday. To say I was thrilled to go to sleep in my bed Saturday night and wake up in my house on Sunday morning is a tremendous understatement. We’ve had a wonderful month, but there truly is no place like home. I’ll be home for five weeks before Mom and I head off for a girls’ trip.

We loved every stop on our trip, and I’d be hard pressed to name a favorite, though Dubrovnik was very cool! Everyone we interacted with from Slovenia to Greece was warm and welcoming, and it is a beautiful part of the world. This was our first Viking Ocean cruise, and I couldn’t tell you if I loved the river or the ocean cruise best. They were both fantastic experiences.

If you are planning a trip to Athens, contact me for the name of our cab driver who went above and beyond the call of duty to help us successfully retrieve Kate’s laptop, which she left in the Athens airport! 🫨😵‍💫🫨 He parked his cab and went in with us to show us where to go and translate for us. We quickly became buddies, and he gifted us a bottle of Greek red wine from his father’s hometown. I have his contact information to share with anyone headed to Athens. As a native of the town, not only is he a great cab driver, but he also offers tours of the city’s many highlights.

If you’re looking for a satisfying project that’s easy enough to knit while watching a movie, this linen stitch knit blanket pattern fits the bill. The pattern creates a blanket that looks fancy, but isn’t fussy! The stitch creates a beautiful woven texture that lies flat, looks elegant, and holds its shape. This blanket was in heavy use in the early spring months on our back porch, and it’s the kind of blanket you’ll want to keep on the back of your couch year-round.

This elote dip recipe brings all the bold flavors of Mexican street corn into a warm, creamy dip that’s perfect for gatherings. With roasted corn, zesty lime, and just enough spice, it’s a little smoky, a little tangy, and totally scoopable. Make a double batch—this one goes fast.

Juicy strawberries and a buttery oat topping come together in this strawberry crumble recipe, which is about as no-fuss as desserts get. It’s the perfect way to use up a bounty of berries and comes together with ingredients you likely have on hand. Serve it warm with ice cream for a dessert that tastes like summer.

These fire-roasted tomatoes are a great way to preserve the flavor of summer tomatoes while adding a smoky depth to your meals. Roast them in the oven or on the grill, then freeze or jar them for later use in soups, sauces, and stews. They’re incredibly versatile and well worth the little bit of prep.

Weeknight dinner just got a whole lot easier with these air fryer tacos. Stuff them with whatever you have on hand—beans, leftover chicken, roasted veggies—then let the air fryer do the rest. They come out golden, crispy, and ready in minutes.

Use summer’s prolific peppers to make this jalapeño pepper wine jelly , which walks that perfect line between sweet and spicy. Spread it over cream cheese, spoon it onto grilled meats, or tuck it into a charcuterie board. It also makes a unique homemade gift, especially when jalapeños are in season.

This DIY desk project proves that a bit of creativity (and a salvaged door) can go a long way. With some sanding, painting, and a few simple tools, an old door becomes a beautiful, functional desk with plenty of character. This is the desk that I am sitting at as I write this! I love the space that a door-sized desk provides. It’s a fun project with significant results and a great way to keep something out of the landfill.

Well friends, we are still digging out and processing ‘things,’ so that’s what I’ll be doing today…and tomorrow…and the next day. I’ve got a darling crochet project to share with you, so I need to get that wrapped up and published. And, the weeds! 😵‍💫Sadly, these are weeds that need to be hand-pulled, so I’ll spend some time doing that this week as well.

Thanks for stopping by today.

    1. Good morning Shelly and belated thanks for your kind comment. I’m just coming up for air after all our travels and finally sitting down long enough to go through my email!

And I can’t tell you how much your words mean to me. When I sit to write every week, I often wonder, ‘will anyone be interested in this?’ and so it is affirming to me to know that at least Shelley in Michigan will enjoy it! 😉

And next month I’m going with my mom to do a little exploring of Michigan, a state I have not spent much time in! We will be in Detroit, Mackinac Island, and Alpena! Mom has always wanted to do a Great Lakes Cruise, so that’s what we are doing. Mom is almost 89 and she and I have never traveled together, just the two of us!

Thanks again for your kind comment and for letting me know you are on the other end of my weekly musings and find them somewhat entertaining!

      Hugs, Lynn
