News from the Nest, november 11
Good Morning!
Today, in the U.S., we honor all our veterans. As the daughter of a career naval officer, I hold this day close. For all the veterans reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your service to our country and the sacrifices you and your family made as you performed your duties in far-off lands.
As everyone knows, we just completed a very contentious election here in the U.S. Whether or not your chosen candidate won, I think we can all agree that our country’s divisions need to heal. It seems insurmountable, I know. But I refuse to believe that simple kindnesses don’t make a difference. Maybe we could slowly chip away at all the negativity and angst if we smiled at, greeted, and helped our neighbors and even perfect strangers. It surely can’t hurt!
We are all in this boat together. We will all rise or fall together.

- These Felt Christmas Sweater Ornaments are a creative and fun project. You can personalize them with initials or other ornamentation. Truly the possibilities are only limited by imagination. String them up for a garland, use them as Christmas ornaments or package toppers.
- I’ve been blogging for nine years! 😮During those nine years, I had projects that I thought were the bee’s knees when I made them, but they just didn’t stand the test of time. Conversely, I have projects that excite me today as much as they did when I made them years ago. This gift wrap cart is a project that has stood the test of time and I bubble over with enthusiasm each Christmas when I pull it out to wrap presents. I share what I used to make my cart and how I organized it. If you have dreams of organized gift wrap storage dancing in your head along with sugar plums, then this DIY wrapping paper organizer cart will make all your Night before Christmas dreams come true!
- You can make these embroidered Christmas trees as fancy or as simple as you like. With the simple embroidery design I used, I could start and finish one in about 90 minutes, but feel free to ‘bling’ them up a bit with fancier stitches and beads. You can use these little trees as holiday gift adornments, tree ornaments, or to hang from garland.
Gift Ideas
- I like the idea of ‘experiences’ for gifts. My sister-in-law and her family recently took an incredible trip to Antarctica as their Christmas gift. But if you are looking for ‘experiences’ on a smaller budget, there are so many great kits that offer the experience of knitting, growing a bonsai tree, or making jewelry. I’ve gathered a variety of craft kits that might appeal to that creative person on your list who has everything but…still would like to learn a craft skill. Check out these 11 Gift Ideas for Creatives.

We had a lovely time having Kate home for the past two weeks. But she left this weekend, and I need to get back to getting things done. Wishing you a week of kindness, for you and those around you.
I’ll see you next week!
Hugs,
Hi Lynn!
The cranberry jalapeño dip sounds wonderful but I don’t care for cilantro. Do you think parsley will be a good substitution or would you suggest something else?
Thanks,
Kathy T
Hi Kathy,
You could surely add parsley instead of cilantro! You’d get the pretty green flecks without that cilantro flavor. My poor hubby doesn’t like cilantro either, but I do and since I do most of the cooking…
enjoy!
As usual, I enjoy reading your newsletter every Monday morning. I highly recommend this podcast: Bre-X: The Six Billion Dollar Gold Scam which is on the Cdn Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

Hi Mary!
Ooooh, thanks for the recommendation! I’ve listened to other podcasts by CBC, but can’t think of them off of the top of my head. Your recommendation sounds like it is right up my alley!
Thanks!
Good morning Lynn,
Its my first Veterans Day without my Dad a WW2 Air Force veteran. Both my daughter and son are Army veterans so we will celebrate and remember so many good people we’ve met throughout the years being part of the military.
As for the Bissell steam cleaner, I had that model and it was recently recalled. They were prompt in issuing a refund but I wasn’t happy with it because it needed to be refilled frequently. I just ordered the Wagner 915E multipurpose power steamer from HSN. Hope this helps!
Thanks, Janz! I really appreciate the steam cleaner input! I’m looking for something that will clean grout well, but not just grout.
And cheers to your family of Veterans! I am always proud to be a part of that community.
Many hugs,
Lynn you’ve outdone yourself as always with your offerings, so thank you for that! Maybe it’s human error on my part, but I don’t see a link for the holiday planner. (help)
Ugh…I’ve fixed it. Thanks.
