News from the Nest, June 23

Good Morning from…home! Yay!

We made good use of our one whole week at home! Terry mowed the grass twice, I pulled a month’s worth of weeds, pulled the Virginia Creeper that enjoyed my absence, and fertilized our garden. I cleaned the house, baked bread, took two piles of items that were no longer needed/wanted to Goodwill and The ReStore, made a batch of dog food for Elsa, and, in general, reclaimed our space. Our home looked like a cartoon home this past week, shaking with bags, boxes, and dust flying out in clouds.

Fiddling around my home is my happy space, so it’s been a happy week! Don’t get me wrong, I love to travel and we’ve had a wonderful two months, but I’m where I’m supposed to be right now!

Next, I need to reclaim my office, which Remie the rabbit lived in for the past year. The carpets need to be shampooed, and I just need to re-order that space.

If you, too, are under the ‘heat dome’ this week, it’ll be a great week to stay indoors and cool! I know I’m going to avoid it as much as possible; walking Elsa right at sunrise and working in the yard in the morning. Take care of yourself!

This crochet strawberry pot is multi-functional! You can use it as a keychain, a purse charm, or a rear window mirror charm. The size can be adjusted to suit your needs; just make the vines shorter with fewer leaves. In any event, it is a quick project that can be started and finished in a day. It relies on the magic ring for several elements, and I’ve attached a video if you need to learn or refresh that simple technique.

🎆🎇I keep checking and double-checking to ensure I’m seeing it right, but it truly does appear that the Fourth of July is next week! Hmmm…Oh well, I guess it’s time to get ready!

There’s something satisfying about pulling a crisp, garlicky dill pickle from your fridge that you made yourself—and it’s easier than you might think. No canning or special tools are needed; just a few fresh ingredients and a little patience while they chill. I particularly like this recipe as it lets you pickle however many cucumbers you have on hand, from a small to a large batch. Here’s how to make easy refrigerator dill pickles.

So we made it 8 days before “tasting” them, aka eating 1/2 the jar. My husband claimed them to be the best pickles ever.

  • I treated myself to this funky, very colorful skort for all of our recent and upcoming travels and I’m so glad I did. Very comfortable and the skort action made it perfect for all the walking and hiking we did.
  • I am sold on these packing cubes, especially for long trips! I put all my tee shirts in one, all my bottoms in one, and all my sweaters in another. Bonus that the drawstring bag acts as a dirty laundry bag!
  • If you need a nice summer-weight cardigan, I can vouch for this one! I’ve had it for a year and it has proven very useful and well-made.
  • Need a handy baby shower gift or a tote for yourself? I use this tote myself as my portable office, and I give it to new mothers to keep their baby essentials in a portable tote. It’s endlessly useful and well-made.
