News from the Nest, October 21

Last week was a fun week, but I couldn’t tell you about it beforehand because it was a secret, and Mom reads the blog. Tuesday was her 88th birthday and also her walk race for her community’s Olympics. My brother and sister-in-law came from Ohio to surprise her. They met her at the end of her walk with balloons and flowers. Then we proceeded just to hang out together and eat for the better part of the week. It was wonderful!

Guess what? Today is National Apple Day! 🍎That would be enough reason to be excited, but we have to double-celebrate because it is also…wait for it…National Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day!!! What? Talk about when worlds collide! Imagine all the snoopy dances going on around the world at this realization!

And, as luck would have it, if you are looking for the appropriate resources to celebrate Cleaning Your Virtual Desktop whilst enjoying tasty apple treats, you’ve come to the right place. Here at Nourish + Nestle, we have our finger on the pulse of all that is important in the world.

So, let’s plan today’s events! First, nab a couple of apples and bake this Apple Spice Quick Bread or this Apple Cider Doughnut Bundt Cake. While your treat is baking and filling your home with the aroma that only home-baked, apple-y, spiced treats can, head over here to read some tips about cleaning your virtual desktop and nab the checklist that guides you through the process. You’ll be ready for the day’s festivities when the oven timer goes off. You are welcome!

You know you are of a certain age when the highlight of your week is a new refrigerator/ freezer. I purchased a lemon of a fridge when we moved five years ago. When the ice maker died last week, and it would cost $550 to repair it, we decided we were done throwing good money after bad. We bit the bullet and purchased a new one that will be delivered this week. Double snoopy happy dance!

This will be my first bottom freezer drawer and I’m noodling the organization before it even arrives!

Speaking of worlds colliding…this White Bean and Cabbage Soup is not only easy on the budget with very simple ingredients but also very tasty! I enjoy its simplicity, but aside from that, this is a starter recipe that you can add to or substitute to make it your own. I’ve included some ideas to get you thinking.

With just two months until Christmas day, it’s an excellent time to start knitting stockings. We have two free Christmas Stocking patterns for you to consider.

  • This Christmas Stocking Knit Pattern works up so quickly that you can easily start and finish one in a day. It uses the Magic Loop for the body of the stocking. Videos showing the Magic Loop, the Kitchener Stitch, and Heel and Toe Shaping will help you successfully knit a stocking.

  • This Christmas stocking pattern is just a slight variation on a theme in that it uses the broken-rib stitch for a little bit of a pattern and Sirdar Alpine for a soft and lovely faux fur cuff. Not only is the full printable PDF pattern available for free, but a full-length video shows all the steps for this Christmas Stocking Knitting Pattern.

I don’t know about you, but potholders often make it on my ‘stocking stuffer gift ideas’ list for my family. Crocheting the thermal stitch on these potholders is a little time-consuming, so get started early if you want to gift them for the holidays.

  • Our Master Bedroom door refuses to stay open, which has bugged me for the five years we have lived here. I’ve hired a handyman to try to fix it and tried some hinge thing, but neither worked. Finally, I found this magnetic door stopper! Brilliant. There are two options for attaching it to the door and baseboards. We are trying the adhesive first; if that doesn’t work, we will drill holes. So far, so good.

    1. Hi Susan,

I haven’t quite figured out the bottom drawer freezer organization yet! But I’m working on it. I’m thinking ‘bins’ are the way to go, but I haven’t found the ones I want to use yet. I will let you know when I do!
