News from the Nest, September 20

Good Morning, Glories!

Are you feeling ‘Fallish’? We were spoiled by beautiful, autumn weather on our travels, but seems summer isn’t too anxious to leave the southeast yet. I’ve been checking the forecast daily to see how soon I can throw up the sashes and let the cooler air in!

As lovely as our 2-week excursion was, it is so nice to be home. Our 4-legged loves, Flora and Peep, could not get enough of us…which is always a good thing!

We spent the week slowly catching up on laundry, housework, and yardwork. Looking back on the list from last week of what I wanted to do when we got home, I actually can check a few things off! I did prepare some healthy food to help us get back on track after our vacation and I did bake some goodies to send in a care package.

  • This Brothy Beans Recipe is one of the healthy foods that I prepared this week. It is on regular rotation in our home and we never tire of it. I love how I can vary it according to what I might need to use up or what I might be craving. Not only is it healthy, but also very easy to make.
  • I feel like I’m the only person in America who hasn’t watched Ted Lasso! Looks like I need a subscription to Apple TV!
  • I am always trying to improve my posture. Some time ago I came across a great tip that works for me; imagine you have a light shining out from your chest. Your light should shine forward, not towards the ground.
  • One of the things I love most about this blog is the crowdsourcing of ideas that it facilitates. After reading the tip about keeping limes and lemons fresh last week, Lucia wrote in with another suggestion. Before juicing them, roll your limes and lemons on the countertop and zap them in the microwave for up to 25 seconds to get the most juice out of them! Thanks Lucia.
  • Speaking of lemons! 🍋 I use this handy Measurements Equivalents Chart on the regular in my kitchen! My mind can only hold so much information and how many TB in a 1/4 cup is such something I’d much rather outsource to a chart. “What does this have to do with 🍋?” you ask? Well, just trust me! 😉
  • Guess what? The first day of Fall is this Wednesday, September 22. I don’t do a whole lot of Fall decorating, just a little here and there. But my autumn kitchen table is easy to do, plus I get to pull out my pumpkin dishes.
  • All that being said, I’ll definitely spend some time fall-ifying my front porch. I did find a pretty white pumpkin at my grocery store this weekend, so I’ve at least started that process.
  • I faux finished this ‘copper’ washtub several years back. I’m pretty sure it will make an appearance on my front porch this year as it is perfect for fall. It is really very easy to ‘faux’ something to make it ‘copper’.
  • Tuesday, September 21 is National Pecan Cookie Day! Guess we need to bake some Pecan Sandies today or tomorrow! And I’m sure I’ll be forgiven if we celebrate a day or two late…it snuck up on me!
  • Several people have asked for a ‘How To Knit’ class. I’ve got a good start on it, with more to be added. If you’d like to learn, check it out.

If you want to learn how to knit or are looking to brush up on your knitting skills and knowledge, pop over to the How to Knit page, which houses all of the posts that teach knitting skills. Or, you could go ahead and visit each one by clicking the links below.

  • Will you be making gifts for giving this Christmas? What’s on your list to make? Have you started? If I’m completely honest…I really haven’t nailed that down yet. But here are some handmade gift ideas to get your creative juices flowing.
  • Revisiting the Five Tips Friday from September several years ago! Hope you’ll find something useful.

Well my friends, I’m signing off!

Wishing you a wonderful Monday.

Until we meet again,

Hugs,

  1. Question: Did you share a recipe in your blog not too long ago for how to make spicy honey with chiles? Or am I losing my mind? I’ve looked and looked, but I have been unable to find it. If you have, would you please email it to me, or a link to where I can find it? I purchased some cute jars to put it in, complete with jute wrapping, mini wooden honey dippers and little brass bees for Christmas gifts. Now all I need is that recipe!

    Thanks!

  2. Hi Lynn! I’ve been making Christmas stockings! I made my own patterns, three sizes. I hand quilt them, using the design on the fabrics as a guide, with soft flannel as the batting and a big embroidery hoop. I started by making two for my children’s partners, so they could have their own to hang here and enjoyed it so much, have finished 2 more for gifts and am about to start a third. I trim them with fake fur and decorate with bells and ribbons. I’m so proud of them! I wish I could show you photos! Enjoy your posts, as always. Kind regards, Kathryn

    1. You are ahead of the game Kathryn! I’d love to see them! Can you take a pictures and send it in an email? My email address is [email protected].

I’m getting myself organized to stamp some Christmas napkins…that’s the plan anyway. I get these ideas in my head and they don’t always follow the plan! But I’m hopeful about these…think they’ll be sweet gifts.

Have a wonderful day, my friend.

      Hugs,

      Lynn

  3. I just started watching Ted Lasso on Sunday. I’ve watched two of the episodes. It’s hilarious. I guess it was a big deal and everyone was watching? I don’t seem to be one of the “in crowd” so I’m late to the party, but still enjoying!

    Happy Fall!
    Maggie.

    1. Hi Maggie,

Glad I’m not the only one late to the party! My mom absolutely loves it…everyone said it is just the tonic we need right now. When I finish everything I want to watch on BritBox, I’ll cancel it then I’ll get Apple TV! I try to discipline myself! 😂

      Happy Fall back atcha!

      Hugs,

      Lynn
